When is it time to upgrade network gear?

Network gear does not come with an expiration date, but there are clear signs when a cheap router from five years ago is holding your business back—or creating security holes. I will break down what matters and what does not, then quote only what is worth replacing.

Signs you have outgrown your network

  • More employees or devices than when the router was bought
  • Frequent reboots “fix” slowness or dropouts temporarily
  • Guest Wi-Fi is the same network as your accounting computers
  • No one knows the admin password, or it is still the factory default
  • You added cameras, phones, and servers but never upgraded the switch
  • Vendor support or security updates ended for your firewall or router

What to upgrade first

For most small offices, the priority is a business-grade firewall/router, reliable Wi-Fi access points, and a switch with enough ports and speed for today—not just yesterday. I quote in stages so you can spread cost if needed, but security and stability come before nice-to-have features.

How I approach replacements

I document what you have, what depends on it, and plan cutover so you are not down all day. Old gear is not always trash—sometimes it moves to guest Wi-Fi while new gear handles the important traffic. If you want the why, I will explain it. If you just want it done cleanly, I will do that too.
