Why is my internet slow?

Slow internet is frustrating because the cause is rarely obvious. Before you buy a new router or blame your provider, it helps to know whether the slowness is everywhere, on one device, or only on Wi-Fi. I will walk you through that—or skip the walkthrough and just handle it.

Three places slowness usually starts

Think of your connection in three layers: the line coming into the building, the Wi-Fi or wiring inside, and the device you are using.

  • The ISP connection — cable, fiber, or fixed wireless to your modem
  • Your network — router, Wi-Fi coverage, and how many devices are competing
  • The device itself — old hardware, background updates, or malware

Quick checks you can do in five minutes

  • Run a speed test on a computer plugged directly into the modem (bypass Wi-Fi). If that is fast, Wi-Fi or the router is the likely culprit.
  • Compare phone on Wi-Fi vs phone on cellular. If cellular is fine but Wi-Fi is slow, focus on coverage or router placement.
  • Restart the modem and router once—power off 30 seconds, then modem first, router second. Note whether speed improves for a while.
  • Check whether one person streaming or uploading large files is using most of the bandwidth.

Or I can just find it for you

If wired speed is still far below what you pay for, the issue may be outside your walls—I can help you document it for your provider. If wired is fine but Wi-Fi is bad in parts of the building, I map coverage and quote a proper fix. If only one computer crawls while others are fine, that machine needs hands-on diagnosis. You pick: walk through it with me, or hand me the keys and I get it done.
